Lantern Vase (colored pencil on acrylic)

As we continue to delve into nighttime subjects, I find myself in images of Morocco, Israel, and other light fixtures that glow in the dark (see Pinterest board of this subject below). The stars depicted here are closer to the Mexican paper lanterns you might see that are shaped like stars. One of the things I'm learning about depicting the dark is remember what space is meant to be empty and which is full (or to simplify, which is black, which is white?). In the middle you will see a white star surrounded by black stars. The magenta color comes from bougainvillias, a flower that grew up the wall of my family's house, and that grows like weeds all over San Diego. Bougainvillias come in sundry colors (orange, white, pinks), but this vivid magenta is the most prevalent (see below)
Bougainvillia hedge in vivid and very classic magenta (Birds and Blooms).
