Nilda Mae, one of my most important friends and inspirations (Pencil, Ink, Acrylic, on 5x5 inch Wooden Block)

This is an image I created of my best friend Nilda Mae. And I learned a lot of lessons about doing portraits of people you love. When you love someone, their image is not just a photograph in your mind. Every line, expression, and smile become a tapestry of the person you know. As a result, it's hard to create an image of them.

Unlike many of the portraits I've done, this is a composite of several memories of her. She has a messy bun and she's wearing one of her signature faux-fur hooded coats over an oversized red scarf. Although this doesn't depict Nilda in her most beautiful or even current form (trust me, she is crazy beautiful), it is the Nilda who is brave and helpful. Who rides the BART alone without fear, and stands up for her friends when they need her. The Nilda who is effortlessly and ever-authentic, powerful and kind. She is my Nilda Mae. And she deserved to be an icon on my wall.
